A very unusual embossed black leather secretaire bureau bookcase by furniture makers Maitland Smith c1980. This whole piece is covered in leather with delicate gold tooling both inside and outside as well as at the back. It dismantles into 2 parts - the top section sitting atop the lower wider section with the drop down bureau.
The elegant pierced cartouche top section opens out to reveal many drawers and small cupboards all beautifully tooled in gilt and the lower section has a very well supported drop down desk section again with many drawers and cubby holes. Finally underneath the desk area are useful graduated drawers. There is a Maitland Smith makers gold label in the right hand top drawer. There is also the orignal decorative key to lock the desk and upper section.
A stunning unusually made piece both beautiful and practical.
